We are a group of medical students at the University of Plymouth, advocating for the South West Baptist Association. We have created this webpage to help churches or individuals in Plymouth with supporting their local communities.

We have provided resources which we hope will empower you to make a meaningful impact during the cost of living crisis.

As you explore our website, you can read about fighting deprivation, how to use your unique skills to fundraise for local charities, and some examples of what we have got up to, in and around Plymouth, to inform this project.

Please fill out our survey with any feedback, or comment on our forum to connect with others and provide additional insights!

Watch this space for a short clip explaining more about our project...

Our Advocates

Below you can read about the generous individuals who have supported us through the creation of this website. We hope that their committment will inspire others to join the cause. Together we will support your church to make a difference to our community.

Carl Smethurst

Regional Minister - SWBA

Carl leads efforts in church planting, pioneer ministry, and inspiring ministers for mission work. He manages new and developing initiatives, supports smaller churches, and oversees Home Mission strategies and grants. He has been integral to our project.

Michael Shaw

Minister of Devonport Community Baptist Church

I am a husband to Katie and a father to Bonnie. We also share our home with two border terrier dogs.

I serve as the minister of Devonport Community Baptist Church and as the free church chaplain at the University of Plymouth. I also help run the Devonport Food Club, based in St Aubyn’s Church and Library.

Devonport is among the 1% most deprived areas in England, with a life expectancy well below the national average and some of the highest child obesity rates in Devon. These issues are deeply systemic.

Through the food club, we work to make healthy food options accessible, using surplus supermarket food and offering it to our members at an affordable price. We ensure that fresh fruit and vegetables are always available.

When I’m not involved in these things, I love coastal walks, good food, and watching Rugby and Cricket.
